Meet Anthea – Funeral Arranger at Fosters Funeral Directors Hamilton
Compassionate, organised, and deeply dedicated to supporting families, Anthea is one of the caring faces of Fosters Funeral Directors. With a natural eye for detail and a calm, reassuring presence, she helps families feel at ease as they navigate one of life’s most difficult moments.
Why were you drawn to the funeral industry?
Before joining Fosters, Anthea worked in a personalised retail role where she honed her customer service skills and learned the importance of tailoring her support to each individual’s needs. These skills proved invaluable when she transitioned into the funeral profession. “I enjoy making arrangements and organising everything,” she explains. “Making sure families feel less stressed and confident that the service focuses on their loved one” is something Anthea takes great pride in.
Anthea is passionate about ensuring each funeral is a true reflection of the person being remembered. From helping families choose meaningful music and personal touches, to suggesting flowers, colours, or even special routes for the funeral cortege, she goes the extra mile to make each service feel unique. “Even the smallest details, like a particular tie colour or flower, can bring comfort,” she says. “It’s about honouring who that person was in a way that feels relevant to their loved ones.”
What is a common misconception about funeral care?
Families often come to Anthea with questions or misconceptions about what happens behind the scenes, and she takes time to gently explain each step with care and transparency. Whether it’s reassuring families that every cremation is carried out individually or helping them feel comfortable visiting their loved one in the funeral home, Anthea believes in offering clear information and emotional support. “Many people are nervous or unsure,” she says, “but once they understand how we care for their loved one with dignity and respect, it brings them real peace of mind.”
Many families naturally have questions about what happens behind the scenes when a loved one has passed, and it’s completely understandable. One of the most common misconceptions is that more than one person may be cremated at the same time, or that ashes could be mixed. In reality, each person is cremated individually, within their own coffin. The cremator can only accommodate one adult at a time, and it is carefully cleaned between each cremation. Throughout the process, we use a secure identification system — similar to that used in hospitals — to ensure every individual is cared for and tracked with absolute accuracy. Families can be reassured that the ashes they receive are solely those of their loved one, handled with the utmost care.
Another sensitive misconception is that families may worry it isn’t truly their loved one resting in the coffin. For many, seeing their loved one at peace can be an important step in accepting their passing, especially if they were unable to be present when death occurred. Our team gently supports families through this experience, keeping them informed and comfortable so that they know what to expect. We take great care to ensure loved ones are resting peacefully and respectfully, helping families find a sense of comfort and closure.
Another misconception which Anthea addresses is that some families think those in our care are frozen until the day of the service, which is not the case. In our mortuary, your loved one rests at a cool, controlled temperature of between 2–5°C. This simply slows the natural process, allowing families the time they need to make arrangements or visit to pay their final respects. It also ensures that our dedicated team can care for each person safely and respectfully at all times.
How do you make families feel welcome and safe at the Hamilton parlour?
Her thoughtful nature extends to the way she runs her branch, too. The space is welcoming and calming — softly scented with reed diffusers, fresh flowers on the desk, and a friendly offer of tea, biscuits, or sweets to help families feel at home. Even the entrance is inviting, with flowers and a dog bowl for local visitors passing by.
Anthea has a genuine gift for making people feel comfortable and cared for, and many families return to her for future arrangements or to say thank you. One memorable moment involved organising a bespoke urn for a client’s loved one, a gesture that meant so much to the family.
In your free time, what do you most enjoy doing?
Outside of work, Anthea enjoys winding down with a good film, a trip to the theatre, or a book in hand. Though her days can be busy supporting families and even assisting colleagues across Scotland’s branches, she finds joy in both her work and her quiet moments.
With her empathy, professionalism, and dedication, Anthea embodies the compassionate spirit that Fosters Funeral Directors is known for — always putting families at the heart of everything she does.
